Chapter 8 - THE DAUGHTER MIRANDA WAS USING

Violet wanted nothing to do with the Patron Register.

At ten, her greatest political concern was whether she could change riding stables without losing a friend named Ava.

Evan asked her about the portrait only after a child therapist advised.

“Did Mom say why sitting beside Uncle Damian mattered?”

“She said our side gets remembered.”

“What side?”

Violet shrugged.

“Ours.”

“Did you understand?”

“No.”

Then:

“She said Clara always gets everything.”

That sentence hurt.

Children hear resentment before they understand structure.

Violet had begun believing Clara was privileged in ways she should resent.

Did Clara have more visibility?

Yes.

I hosted more events.

She was my child.

That naturally placed her near me.

Had Violet been deprived?

No.

But Miranda taught comparison.

“Clara gets chair.”

“Clara gets front table.”

“Clara gets official Christmas photo.”

Some of those were true.

None were Violet’s fault.

Then Evan told me:

“Miranda has been trying to make Violet care about this for years.”

How?

Old photographs.

Pointing out positions.

“This is where our branch used to stand.”

“This is where Damian’s father put us.”

“Look who gets center.”

A child trained to read family photos like battlefield maps.

Then Violet said something that clarified her own resistance.

“I like when Mom isn’t at pictures.”

Why?

“She fixes my shoulders.”

Evan laughed sadly.

May you like

That was the daughter Miranda believed she was elevating.

A girl who wanted to slouch in peace.
