Chapter 11

Sofia and I had our own repair to do.

Easy stories would make me protector and her victim.

That would be false.

I failed her before I protected her.

My secrecy helped.

Our private marriage had once been reasonable.

Then danger passed.

I delayed the public announcement anyway.

Why?

Convenience.

Business.

Timing.

One more dinner.

One more week.

One more negotiation.

Sofia never complained.

That did not mean it cost nothing.

Without public clarity, Delia occupied the visible place beside me while Sofia lived in half-light.

Wife privately.

“Milo’s mother”—no, Lily’s mother publicly.

Companion to some.

Mystery to others.

I told myself privacy protected her.

Sometimes it did.

Sometimes it made her easier to diminish.

“I should have announced us months ago.”

Sofia looked at me.

“Yes.”

No false modesty.

Good.

“Why didn’t you push?”

She thought.

“Because I didn’t want people saying the young wife needed attention.”

That age difference again.

Twenty-five and fifty.

Every room noticed.

Sofia knew exactly what people thought.

She overcorrected by asking for less.

Less recognition.

Less authority.

Less complaint.

Delia exploited that too.

I took Sofia’s hand.

Healing skin.

“No more disappearing to make other people comfortable.”

She smiled faintly.

“That sounds like an order.”

Fair.

I rephrased.

“What do you want?”

“Choice.”

Simple.

So the public announcement happened when she chose.

Not at a gala.

Not beneath chandeliers.

A family dinner weeks later.

I introduced her once.

“My wife, Sofia.”

Nothing else.

No speech about rank.

No brooch.

No applause required.

People adjusted.

Amazing how often “tradition” survives only until someone calmly states a new reality.
