Chapter 6

The birthday gala had its own purpose.

That became clear when I returned downstairs.

Delia had prepared a toast.

Vincent brought me the card.

Not secret.

Printed beautifully.

Placed beside her seat.

She planned to speak before Lily’s cake.

The speech praised family continuity.

Mother.

Tradition.

Lily.

Me.

Not Sofia.

Not once.

My wife had been reduced to absence before an audience that did not yet know she was being erased.

I asked Delia:

“What were you going to say when guests asked where Lily’s mother was?”

She looked away.

Marcus answered.

“That she preferred privacy.”

Of course.

The same secrecy I created to protect Sofia had become a story anyone could fill.

“She was in the kitchen.”

Marcus shrugged.

“Temporarily.”

I looked at him.

“You were going to let my daughter celebrate her birthday while her mother washed your pans.”

He said nothing.

Good.

Then I noticed another detail.

The family table seating chart.

Delia beside me.

Lily beside Delia.

My chair at the center.

Sofia nowhere.

That was the real theft.

Not a brooch.

Position.

Delia had run my homes for years before Sofia.

Selected menus.

Hosted widows.

Managed Christmas.

Remembered birthdays.

Settled staff arguments.

When Sofia entered, nobody told Delia:

Thank you. Now step back.

Especially not me.

I assumed roles would adjust naturally.

They did.

Toward conflict.

Delia interpreted Sofia’s arrival not as expansion but replacement.

Marcus encouraged that.

Why?

His privileges depended on Delia being household center.

Private dinners.

Guest access.

Use of my penthouse when I was away.

Influence without formal rank.

Sofia had started changing simple things.

Guest lists.

Staff hours.

Children at late-night dinners.

Nothing political.

Everything domestic.

Marcus hated it.

He told Delia:

“Once Sofia takes Mother’s place, we’re guests in our own family.”

Poison disguised as insight.

Delia believed him because part of her already felt it.

My sister was not trying to become Mafia boss.

She was fighting to remain indispensable.

And she had chosen my wife’s dignity as the battlefield.
