Chapter 15

Mother’s brooch remained in my safe for almost a year.

Then Sofia asked for it.

I said nothing.

Just brought the box.

She opened it.

Touched the metal.

No fear.

No competition.

“Tell me about your mother.”

So I did.

Not mythology.

The real woman.

She hated formal dinners.

Loved terrible detective novels.

Could stretch soup for fifteen people.

Once threw a wooden spoon at my father because he insulted a waitress.

Missed.

Hit Marcus’s father.

Family legend improved with age.

Sofia laughed.

Good.

Then:

“Did she really work in kitchens?”

“Yes.”

“Did she think that made her worthy of your father?”

“No.”

“She think being his wife made her worthy?”

“No.”

“What did?”

I remembered Mother answering a similar question when I was young.

Nothing.

She never spoke about worth like admission to a club.

She believed you belonged to yourself first.

Everyone else received whatever place you freely shared.

I told Sofia.

She sat quietly.

Then pinned the brooch to her blouse.

Not gown.

Not gala.

Simple afternoon.

“How does it look?”

“Like jewelry.”

She smiled.

Exactly.

The object finally became small enough to wear.

She did not become Mother.

Did not defeat Delia.

Did not inherit a throne.

May you like

She simply wore something that once belonged to a woman I loved.

That was all it ever needed to mean.
