Chapter 5

Lily remembered more than any adult wanted.
Children always do.
After Sofia washed her hands and changed clothes, Lily refused to leave her lap.
I sat across from them in my bedroom.
No guests.
No Delia.
“Did Aunt Delia make Mommy work every day?”
Lily nodded.
“What did she say?”
Sofia started:
“Raffaele—”
I shook my head gently.
Let her answer.
Lily thought.
“Aunt Delia said Mommy has to be good before Daddy comes home.”
My stomach tightened.
“What happens if Mommy isn’t good?”
“She goes downstairs.”
Sofia closed her eyes.
“What downstairs?”
Lily pointed toward the service floor.
Not locked.
Not imprisoned.
Worse in a subtler way.
Delia moved Sofia out of our bedroom on day seven.
Why?
Because Sofia refused to serve Marcus dinner after already working fourteen hours.
Delia told her that if she wanted to behave like “an outsider,” she could sleep where outsiders slept.
Sofia spent one night in a small staff room.
Then returned upstairs the next day after apologizing.
“To Delia?”
“Yes.”
I stood and walked to the window.
Not because I needed distance from Sofia.
Because I needed somewhere to put my hands.
Behind me Lily whispered:
“Mommy cried quiet.”
That sentence nearly broke me.
I had called that night.
Sofia told me she had a headache.
I believed her.
Why?
Because trust normally means believing.
Delia understood that too.
She never had to intercept our calls.
Never had to block a message.
She simply made Sofia ashamed to tell me what she was enduring.
That was cleaner.
More effective.
If Sofia confessed, Delia had framed it as failure.
Unable to handle the household.
Unable to respect tradition.
Unable to support me while I worked.
My sister weaponized Sofia’s desire not to become another problem in my life.
I looked at my wife.
“You should have told me.”
She met my eyes.
“I know.”
Then:
“But you should have made it impossible for anyone to convince me I had to earn being your wife.”
That was mine.
I sat down again.
“Yes.”
No defense.
No “I was busy.”
May you like
No “I thought you knew.”
She was right.
