Chapter 14

Delia apologized to Sofia after nine months.

Sofia chose the location.

A small café.

No Montoro property.

I did not attend.

I heard about it later.

Delia began badly.

“I was grieving Mother.”

Sofia stopped her.

“Try again.”

Good.

Delia did.

“I was afraid of becoming unnecessary.”

Better.

Then:

“I made that your punishment.”

There.

She admitted taking the brooch.

Inventing Mother’s imagined standards.

Using my absence.

Turning staff hierarchy against Sofia.

The slaps.

The staff room.

The delayed meals.

The pans.

All of it.

No Marcus excuse until after her own choices were named.

Then Sofia asked:

“If Raffaele never came into the kitchen, when were you going to stop?”

Delia cried.

“I don’t know.”

Correct answer.

Probably never on her own.

That mattered.

Cruelty often does not contain its own stopping point.

It stops when someone interrupts, leaves, resists, or gets caught.

Sofia did not forgive her that afternoon.

She said:

“I believe you regret it.”

Different.

Delia accepted.

Before leaving, she asked whether she could see Lily.

Sofia said:

“Not yet.”

Delia nodded.

No argument.

Progress.

Three months later, Lily saw her aunt in a park.

Supervised.

Short.

Delia brought no gifts.

Good.

Lily ran toward her anyway.

Sofia cried afterward.

Not because she regretted it.

Because boundaries are painful even when correct.
