Chapter 9

I gave Sofia Mother’s brooch three days later.

Privately.

No ballroom.

No guests.

She looked at the box and did not open it.

“I don’t want it.”

Fair.

“Because Delia wore it?”

“Because everyone keeps acting like it means I won something.”

I sat beside her.

“It doesn’t.”

“Then why give it?”

Good question.

I thought.

“Because I meant to.”

Not because she earned it.

Not because Delia lost.

Not because Mother demanded continuity.

I had chosen it because Mother was the woman who taught me a house belonged as much to the people eating in the kitchen as the people dining beneath chandeliers.

Sofia understood that instinctively.

Still, she pushed the box back.

“Not now.”

I accepted.

Good.

No symbolic coronation.

She had spent twelve days being told objects proved rank.

Brooch.

Seat.

Dress.

Kitchen.

She needed less symbolism, not more.

Instead, we dealt with hands.

Her skin recovered slowly.

Lily insisted on rubbing lotion over Sofia’s fingers every night.

Far too much.

Most ended on blankets.

Useful chaos.

Then Sofia asked for something I did not expect.

“Don’t fire the kitchen staff.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Some of them watched.”

“Yes.”

“They were afraid.”

“Yes.”

“Some enjoyed it.”

Also yes.

Different people.

Different responsibility.

We reviewed them individually.

One cook had secretly left food for Sofia in the pantry after Delia ordered her meals delayed.

He stayed.

One event assistant had laughed when Delia called Sofia “maid.”

He apologized.

Sofia chose whether she wanted him working future private events.

She did not.

One senior maid knew Sofia was my wife and still obeyed Delia because Delia had hired her fifteen years earlier.

She resigned herself.

No massacre.

No purge.

Just consequences attached to conduct.

That disappointed people who prefer dramatic justice.

May you like

I did not care.

The house needed to become safe, not entertaining.
