Chapter 11

Claire did not celebrate being proven right about the estate.

She had been right for the wrong reason.

Leo had been unsafe there.

But not because Carmine wanted him unsafe.

Because Carmine created a structure where somebody with family authority could interfere with his son while everyone assumed somebody else had permission.

That distinction mattered legally.

It mattered less emotionally.

“You still didn’t see him,” Claire told Carmine.

They were sitting in the kitchen of his new house.

“No.”

“You were in the same building.”

“I know.”

“Do you understand why that scares me?”

“Yes.”

“You keep answering like a defendant.”

Carmine almost defended himself.

Then stopped.

“What answer do you want?”

“The real one.”

He looked at the table.

“The real answer is I thought paying people to protect him meant he was protected.”

Claire stayed quiet.

“I thought being nearby meant I was present.”

Still quiet.

“I thought if something serious happened, somebody would come get me.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Something serious was happening.”

“I know.”

This time the words sounded different.

Not defensive.

Ashamed.

The temporary custody arrangement remained.

Claire kept the majority of overnights while the evaluator observed Carmine’s new household.

Carmine did not fight for immediate equality simply because Helena’s scheme had been exposed.

He had something to prove.

Not to Claire.

To Leo.

Could his father create a home where safety did not depend on everyone fearing his reaction?

That required time.

Maria transferred to the new house voluntarily.

Only after negotiating her own employment contract through a labor attorney.

Carmine raised an eyebrow when Julia told him.

“She hired a lawyer?”

Julia smiled.

“You should be proud.”

“I’m not sure proud is the word.”

Maria was direct.

“No family discipline orders through third parties. No changing Leo’s meals as punishment. My childcare authority is written down. If somebody outranks me socially but not legally, I still say no.”

Carmine signed every condition.

Then added one.

“If I give an unsafe instruction, you say no to me too.”

May you like

Maria looked at him.

“That might be my favorite one.”
