Chapter 14

Helena eventually accepted a negotiated resolution.

She did not receive a theatrical sentence.

She did not disappear into prison for life.

The consequences were more ordinary and therefore harder for her to dismiss.

Criminal penalties.

Court supervision.

Mandatory treatment.

A protective order restricting access to Leo.

Financial liability connected to the custody manipulation.

Permanent removal from Bellucci company authority.

She also lost the one thing she cared about most.

Influence.

Nobody asked Helena to approve household staffing.

Nobody brought her business disputes.

Nobody waited for her opinion before family decisions.

For decades, she had confused being necessary with being loved.

Now she had to discover whether anyone wanted a relationship with her when obedience was removed.

Carmine was not ready.

Leo was too young to carry that question.

The estate was sold the following spring.

The announcement caused an uproar.

Carmine’s father had bought the property forty years earlier.

Every Bellucci holiday happened there.

Portraits lined the staircase.

The garage still contained the scratch on the wall where Helena’s detailing rack crashed.

Carmine walked through the empty rooms one final time.

Maria joined him in the garage.

“You going to miss it?”

“Parts.”

She looked toward the spot where Leo had been kneeling.

“Not this part.”

“No.”

Carmine gave the car Helena had used in the incident to an auction house.

Several relatives assumed he would destroy it.

He did not.

Cars were objects.

He had learned not to turn symbols into more drama than they deserved.

The proceeds went toward Leo’s therapy and a local child-food program.

No press release.

No Bellucci plaque.

Maria learned about it because she handled some household accounting.

“You know donating quietly ruins your reputation.”

“I’ll survive.”

She smiled.

Carmine did too.

His legitimate restructuring also passed.

Smaller company.

Less family control.

More outside management.

Helena’s prediction had failed.

Losing the estate had not turned Carmine back into the old Bellucci boss.

It had made returning impossible.
