Chapter 13

The family court evaluator issued her report six months after the garage incident.
It was not flattering to anyone.
Claire had correctly identified risks around the Bellucci estate but had sometimes interpreted Carmine’s silence through the worst possible version of him.
Carmine had provided substantial financial and emotional support but relied too heavily on staff and family intermediaries.
Helena had deliberately exploited those weaknesses.
The new residence, however, was different.
No family operations.
Limited security.
Clear childcare authority.
Direct communication between parents.
No relative could enter simply because of surname.
Leo had his own room.
His own meal routine.
His preschool was five minutes away.
Most importantly, the evaluator observed him with Carmine repeatedly.
No performance.
No staged family dinners.
Ordinary mornings.
Shoes that Leo refused to wear.
Milk spilled across a table.
A tantrum over a blue cup.
Carmine handling all of it badly at first and better later.
The evaluator recommended returning gradually toward equal parenting time.
Claire agreed.
Carmine was surprised.
“You don’t have to agree yet.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Claire looked through the observation-room glass at Leo playing with blocks.
“Because I wanted him safe.”
“So did I.”
“I know that now.”
It was the closest thing to forgiveness either of them had attempted.
Renato had remained largely outside the scheme, but the garage incident cost him too.
His words—
Trash stays with trash.
—had been witnessed by staff and documented.
Carmine removed him permanently from any role involving household authority.
Renato protested.
“You’re comparing me to Helena?”
“No.”
Carmine looked at him.
“I’m judging what you did without needing it to be the worst thing anyone did.”
Renato had kicked food away from a hungry child because he considered humiliation an acceptable response to disobedience.

No conspiracy was required to make that wrong.
For once, the Bellucci family stopped treating accountability like a competition where only the worst person lost.
