Chapter 9

The custody evaluator found something Julia had not.
The anonymous material sent to Claire had been curated.
Not fabricated.
Curated.
There were never photographs of Carmine feeding Leo breakfast.
No pictures of bedtime stories.
No images of the pediatric nurse who visited the estate.
No photographs of Maria carrying Leo upstairs after a punishment.
The sender selected moments supporting one conclusion.
That mattered because the full security footage showed a more complicated reality.
Carmine was often absent during the incidents.
But not absent from Leo’s life generally.
The evaluator criticized him for delegation and the environment he maintained.
She did not conclude he was an uninvolved father.
Then technical records connected one anonymous email account to a recovery phone number.
Not Helena’s.
Denise’s.
Denise admitted creating the account.
Under Helena’s instruction.
The purpose, Helena told her, was to “make sure Claire sees what Carmine refuses to see.”
Denise also turned over messages she had preserved.
Several were ambiguous.
One was not.
Helena wrote:
Once Claire files, let Carmine fight. He’ll lose six months to lawyers, then he’ll stop pretending he can be a suburban father and run this family at the same time.
Carmine read it in Julia’s office.
Claire sat beside him.
Neither spoke.
Another message:
Do not hurt the boy. I need photographs, not a hospital.
Julia stopped reading.
Carmine’s hands closed into fists.
Claire stared at the wall.
That sentence was important for two reasons.
It proved Helena understood she was deliberately creating distress.
And it proved she believed there was a line she was not crossing.
In Helena’s mind, hunger without hospitalization was acceptable.
Dirty clothes without injury were acceptable.
Exhaustion without medical crisis was acceptable.
She believed she was controlling the harm.
Julia said quietly:
“People who manufacture danger often convince themselves that controlling the degree makes them responsible.”
Carmine looked at her.
“She starved him.”
“Yes.”
“For leverage against me.”
“That is what the evidence is beginning to show.”
Beginning.
Not complete.
The evaluator found one more timeline.
The first anonymous contact with Claire’s lawyer occurred four days after Carmine informed Helena that his business restructuring would remove her from operational control of Bellucci Holdings.

The final anonymous packet arrived two days before the family vote on that restructuring was originally scheduled.
The custody pressure and the corporate fight had been moving together from the beginning.
