Chapter 8

Carmine made the decision Julia warned him could not be quietly reversed.
He asked the family court for an immediate independent custody evaluation.
Himself.
Not Claire.
He submitted the estate security records relevant to Leo.
Staff schedules.
Meal logs.
Helena’s instructions.
The anonymous photographs.
The garage footage.
The temporary parenting arrangement.
He also disclosed the basic nature of the Bellucci household environment instead of pretending the estate was an ordinary suburban home.
Armed security.
Frequent extended-family meetings.
Relatives with criminal histories.
Employees accustomed to hierarchical orders.
Julia looked at him before filing.
“The evaluator may decide Claire should have primary custody for longer than either of you expects.”
“I know.”
“They may conclude the estate is inappropriate for Leo.”
“I know.”
“They may ask questions about your work.”
“I know.”
“You could lose time with your son.”
Carmine looked through the office door.
Leo was sitting with Claire in the waiting area coloring a dinosaur purple.
“If my answer to that fear is hiding evidence, then Helena already won.”
Julia filed.
The Bellucci family erupted.
Helena called it betrayal.
Two senior capos told Carmine he had exposed private family operations over “domestic accusations.”
Carmine removed both from meetings involving legitimate businesses.
His restructuring plan accelerated instead of stopping.
He separated household security from family operations.
Bought a private residence in Winnetka under conventional management.
No capos would conduct business there.
No relatives would have standing access.
The estate would remain a Bellucci property.
It would no longer be Leo’s primary home.
That decision hurt Carmine more than he expected.
He had grown up in that house.
So had his father.
His childhood height marks were still inside a pantry doorway.
But history did not transform a building into a safe place.
The first night Leo slept at Carmine’s new home, he asked:
“Helena’s car here?”
“No.”
“Do I clean?”
“Not unless you spill something.”
Leo thought about that.
“Dinner anyway?”
Carmine felt his throat tighten.
“Dinner anyway.”
Leo nodded.
May you like
Then returned to his toy truck.
That question made every financial loss from the restructuring seem cheap.
