Chapter 12

The confrontation happened in Rebecca’s downtown Chicago office.
Vanessa arrived with her lawyer.
Grant came separately.
Raffaele sat across from both.
No bodyguards inside.
Independent counsel summarized the evidence.
Phantom security hours.
Consulting payments.
Bonus records.
Adrian’s notebook.
Assignment changes.
Incident reports.
Statements from Coleman and Reese.
Grant attacked first.
“Adrian still fought them.”
Raffaele looked at him.
“They grabbed him.”
“He’s trained.”
“He’s fourteen.”
Grant leaned back.
“You act like he’s some innocent little kid. You’ve been grooming him to be you since Dominic died.”
That sentence shifted the emotional center.
Vanessa looked away.
Raffaele noticed.
“What does Adrian have to do with you?”
Vanessa answered before Grant could.
“You give him everything.”
Raffaele stared at her.
“Everything?”
“Your time. The gym. The rallies. Business talk.”
“He’s my nephew.”
“He’s the son you never had.”
The room became still.
Raffaele looked toward the door.
Lily was not present.
Good.
“She’s my daughter.”
“I know.”
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“And someday she’ll inherit your name while Adrian inherits your respect.”
There it was.
Not a rational business motive.
An insecurity feeding another crime.
Vanessa had watched Raffaele treat Adrian like Dominic’s living legacy.
She felt secondary.
Then Grant’s scheme created a practical reason to turn that resentment into action.
If Adrian became “dangerous,” Vanessa could remove him from the household while protecting her brother’s money.
Grant finally admitted that the consulting fees had helped cover Vanessa’s old debts.
“I was keeping my sister from being humiliated.”
Raffaele looked at him.
“So you humiliated my daughter.”
Grant did not answer.
Vanessa whispered:
“I never thought Lily would remember this.”
Raffaele’s expression hardened.
“That might be the worst thing you’ve said.”
She looked confused.
May you like
“You thought it was acceptable because she was too young to remember.”
For the first time, Vanessa stopped defending herself.
