Chapter 14

Raffaele rejected the bargain.
Grant’s attorney convinced him to cooperate without it.
At the final foundation meeting, Grant admitted he knew some security invoices overstated actual staffing.
He claimed the scheme began as a way to keep his preferred vendor financially stable between large events.
Then it became income.
Then hiding it became more important than the original money.
He resigned from all Moretti-affiliated positions.
The foundation approved civil recovery action and outside disclosure.
Grant’s criminal exposure, if any, would be determined elsewhere and over time.
Vanessa attended only the family portion afterward.
She looked different without event jewelry and carefully managed confidence.
Raffaele placed two folders in front of her.
One contained separation terms.
The other contained preliminary divorce paperwork.
Vanessa looked at both.
“You already decided.”
“No.”
“Then why is that here?”
“Because staying married is no longer the default.”
She looked down.
“What would I have to do?”
Raffaele did not answer with a checklist.
“That isn’t how this works.”
“I’ll go to therapy.”
“For you.”
“I’ll pay back what Grant covered.”
“You should.”
“I’ll apologize to Adrian.”
“If he wants to hear it.”
Her eyes filled.
“And Lily?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked up.
“No forever?”
“No apology right now.”
“She needs to know I’m sorry.”
“She needs to know adults can’t demand access to her because they feel guilty.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
For the first time, Raffaele saw her understand that remorse did not restore authority.
Then she asked:
“What do you want?”
Raffaele thought about the courtyard.
Lily on her knees.
Adrian surrounded.
Adults watching because they believed his name required silence.
“I want my daughter to grow up in a family where saying no to us is safe.”
Vanessa looked down at the folders.
Raffaele stood.
May you like
She had one final chance to choose accountability without being promised reconciliation.
He left both folders on the table and walked out.
