Chapter 13

The next month was paperwork.

Statements.

Invoices.

Employment records.

Foundation minutes.

Vendor contracts.

Boring things that made dramatic lies harder to maintain.

Coleman and Reese were terminated by their employer.

Both agreed to provide sworn statements about Grant’s instructions.

The security vendor produced payroll records showing the special bonuses.

The consulting company’s bank records established how money moved from rally contracts into Grant’s business interests.

Vanessa’s debt records showed Grant had paid several obligations on her behalf.

That did not make her part of every financial transaction.

It did establish why she feared scrutiny of him.

The foundation board prepared civil claims seeking repayment of unsupported charges.

Outside counsel also advised voluntary disclosure to appropriate authorities and major donors.

Raffaele did not control what happened after that.

He accepted it.

Melissa made a separate decision.

Adrian would not return to Moretti rallies until he wanted to.

No one would treat participation as family duty.

Raffaele agreed.

Then Rebecca gave him the final issue.

His marriage.

Vanessa still legally lived at the estate.

They had been separated inside the same property since the rally.

Her attorney proposed a private marital agreement, financial disclosure, and counseling.

Raffaele read it.

“What does Vanessa want?”

“To stay married.”

“Why?”

Rebecca looked at him.

“You’ll have to ask her.”

One thing was nonnegotiable.

Vanessa would have no unsupervised access to Lily during the separation.

A child therapist supported that boundary based on Lily’s fear response.

Raffaele signed the temporary parenting and household arrangement.

Then he instructed Rebecca to prepare divorce options anyway.

Not because he had made the final decision.

Because for once he wanted choices before the next confrontation.

The following morning, Grant requested one final meeting.

He was prepared to admit more about the billing scheme.

But only if Raffaele stopped pursuing Vanessa’s financial records.

Even now, he was trying to protect his sister by bargaining with someone else’s truth.
