Chapter 15

The Moretti Riders Foundation survived.

It lost two major donors and gained stricter financial controls.

Security contracting was moved to an independent procurement process.

No family member could approve a vendor they had a personal financial relationship with.

Grant’s preferred security company repaid disputed charges under a civil settlement.

Grant sold an investment property to satisfy part of his own obligations and remained outside every Moretti organization while other legal reviews continued.

Coleman and Reese never worked a Moretti event again.

Vincent Russo personally apologized to Adrian for signing an incident report he had not witnessed.

Adrian did not forgive him immediately.

Nobody asked him to.

Vanessa moved into a rented condominium in River North.

She and Raffaele formally separated.

She began individual therapy and provided complete financial disclosure through attorneys.

Raffaele did not withdraw the divorce papers.

He also did not file them immediately.

That decision remained between the adults and did not change Lily’s boundaries.

Vanessa had no direct contact with the child.

Lily stopped asking whether Grant “outranked” her.

She also stopped kneeling whenever an adult raised their voice.

That took longer.

Raffaele began therapy himself.

His first goal sounded embarrassingly simple.

Learn how to make disagreement feel safe.

Adrian returned to boxing after two months.

His coach changed the emphasis of training.

Less about winning exchanges.

More about disengaging when possible.

Adrian hated the drills.

Then he became good at them.

The following spring, the charity rally returned to the estate.

Smaller.

No inflated security presence.

No family hierarchy speeches.

Lily wore sneakers and carried a small helmet covered in flower stickers.

Raffaele found Adrian standing outside the courtyard gate.

The boy had grown another inch.

“You coming in?” Raffaele asked.

Adrian looked through the gate.

Motorcycles gleamed beneath the morning sun.

Volunteers were setting up donation tables.

Lily spotted him.

“Adrian!”

She ran halfway across the courtyard before remembering the rule about the driveway.

She stopped and waved instead.

Adrian smiled.

Raffaele waited.

He did not tell the boy that Dominic would have wanted him there.

He did not remind him they were family.

He did not turn the invitation into an obligation.

Finally Adrian asked:

“Those security guys really gone?”

“Yeah.”

“Grant too?”

“Yeah.”

Adrian looked at Raffaele.

“And if somebody tells Lily to kneel?”

Raffaele’s answer came without hesitation.

“She gets to say no.”

Adrian looked back through the gate.

Then at his uncle.

“I might come next year.”

Raffaele nodded.

“Okay.”

He started walking inside.

Behind him, Adrian remained at the gate for several seconds.

Raffaele did not turn around to see whether he followed.
