Chapter 8

Raffaele made the irreversible decision at a foundation board meeting.
He disclosed the suspected security billing irregularities.
He disclosed Adrian’s incident reports.
He disclosed that Grant was his brother-in-law.
And he recused himself from directing the internal investigation.
The board hired independent nonprofit counsel.
Grant’s security vendor was suspended.
The foundation notified its insurer and outside accountant.
Donors began calling within hours.
One sponsor paused a six-figure pledge.
Another demanded assurance that charity money had not been diverted.
Raffaele could have kept the matter quieter for longer.
He chose not to.
Vanessa learned before dinner.
She came to the estate with her attorney.
“You just destroyed my brother.”
“No.”
Raffaele remained standing.
“I stopped protecting him.”
“You don’t even know he stole anything.”
“That’s why accountants are looking.”
She stared at him.
“And us?”
“What about us?”
“You’ve locked me out of my own home functions. You’ve told staff not to take instructions from me. Now you’re investigating my brother.”
“You put Lily on her knees.”
“She was learning respect.”
Raffaele’s expression changed.
“No.”
Vanessa noticed.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
Then she said:
“Adrian is dangerous around her.”
Raffaele almost laughed.
“That’s your defense?”
“I have reports.”
“Written by Grant.”
“I have witnesses.”
“People you told I approved it.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
Then she made a mistake.
“You have no idea what Adrian found.”
Raffaele became completely still.
He had not mentioned Adrian’s notebook.
Vanessa realized it.
Too late.
Raffaele looked at her attorney.
Then back at his wife.
“What did Adrian find?”
May you like
Vanessa did not answer.
But she had finally confirmed that the fourteen-year-old’s observations mattered far more than anyone had admitted.
