Chapter 10

The call had been recorded automatically by the old security system.
Finding it took six hours.
The file had been archived under a number instead of a name.
October 11.
11:43 p.m.
Michael’s voice entered the room after five years.
Younger.
Tired.
Angry.
Domenico sat completely still.
Helen covered her mouth.
Richard stared at the floor.
Michael told the household operator he needed Domenico immediately.
Domenico was in Chicago recovering from the shooting.
The operator said he would transfer the call to Helen.
Then Michael spoke again.
“I’m not going to Nevada. Dad knows the route is bad. Tell Dom I said no.”
A click.
Helen’s voice.
Soft.
Controlled.
“Michael?”
The recording continued.
Michael told her Richard was forcing the operation.
He wanted Domenico notified.
He wanted his brother to stop it.
Then came the silence that destroyed what remained of the Carter family.
Helen said:
“Your brother already approved it.”
Domenico’s eyes closed.
Ethan began crying quietly beside him.
Michael’s voice changed on the recording.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
Another pause.
Then Michael whispered:
“Of course he did.”
The call ended.
Domenico did not move.
Helen was sobbing now.
Richard’s face remained hard.
But his breathing had become uneven.
The major truth was finally complete.
Richard ordered Michael into Nevada despite the warning.
Helen knew Michael wanted Domenico’s help.
Instead of connecting the brothers, she lied and told Michael that Domenico had approved the mission.
After Michael died, Richard needed the official record to match the story.
Helen helped attach Domenico’s genuine signature to the authorization.
They let Domenico believe Michael volunteered.
They let the family believe Domenico approved it.
And as Ethan grew older, Helen quietly allowed the boy to believe his uncle chose the mission that killed his father.
Why?
Because exposing Richard would have shattered his authority when the family was already unstable.
Helen chose her husband’s power over one son.
Then chose the lie over the other.
But the birthday plot added another layer.
A digitization project had begun on the family archives.
Within weeks, the Nevada file would have been scanned and examined.
Richard knew the old forgery might surface.
If Domenico remained in control when it did, Richard’s legacy would collapse.
So he needed Domenico weakened first.
The chain.
The destroyed bicycle.
The public humiliation.
The edited footage.
The leadership review.
All of it had been designed to remove Domenico before the old records exposed Richard.
Ethan had been displayed as the child Domenico supposedly failed.
Lily had been tortured into becoming proof that Domenico had become unstable.
Two grandchildren used to protect one old man’s reputation.
Domenico finally looked at his father.
His voice was quiet.
“You didn't punish Lily because I became weak.”
Richard lifted his eyes.
Domenico continued.
“You punished her because you were afraid I was about to learn what you did to Michael.”
May you like
Richard’s hands closed.
For the first time in Domenico’s life, his father had no answer.
