Chapter 12

Helen could not look at Domenico.

That was enough.

He stood slowly.

The chair moved backward across the floor.

Nobody else moved.

“What did he say?”

Helen’s voice barely existed.

“I don't remember.”

Domenico stared at her.

Her breathing became ragged.

“Mom.”

The childhood word broke whatever remained of her composure.

She covered her face.

“He asked you to call him.”

Domenico’s jaw tightened.

“What else?”

“He said Dad was forcing him into Nevada.”

Ethan began crying again.

Domenico kept his eyes on Helen.

“And?”

She lowered her hands.

“He said if you didn't stop Richard, he was leaving the family.”

Silence.

There was the secret beneath the secret.

Michael had not only refused one operation.

He planned to walk away.

And he wanted Domenico to go with him.

Helen deleted the voicemail because she feared the brothers leaving together would destroy Richard’s authority completely.

“You chose him.”

Domenico looked toward his father.

Then back at Helen.

“Twice.”

Helen shook her head.

“I chose the family.”

“No.”

Domenico’s voice stayed low.

“You chose the version of the family where he remained in control.”

Helen's lips trembled.

She had no answer.

Then Frank Malloy produced something else.

A sealed envelope.

Michael gave it to him before leaving for Nevada.

“For Ethan when he’s old enough.”

Richard’s eyes sharpened.

“You kept that?”

Frank looked at him.

“Yes.”

For once the old bodyguard did not sound afraid.

Domenico opened nothing.

He handed the envelope to Ethan’s legal guardian—his mother, Rachel Carter, who had arrived after being called to the estate.

The letter belonged to Ethan.

Not the council.

Not Domenico.

Rachel read it privately first.

Her face changed.

Then she asked Ethan whether he wanted Domenico present.

The boy nodded.

Michael’s letter was simple.

He told his son that if anything happened, Ethan should never let the Carter name decide what kind of man he became.

Then one line stopped everyone:

If your grandfather ever tells you cruelty is strength, remember that the bravest thing I tried to do was say no to him.

May you like

Ethan looked toward Richard.

The old patriarch’s face finally cracked.
