Chapter 4

Domenico replayed the clip.
Once.
Twice.
On the third viewing he watched Helen instead of Richard.
She did not look shocked by the instruction.
She nodded.
Then glanced at Lily outside.
“Keep her there until he sees it.”
Domenico switched off the video.
Helen sat across from him.
Her hands rested elegantly in her lap.
Only her right thumb moved.
Rubbing the edge of her wedding ring.
“You expected me to find her.”
Helen’s eyes remained on him.
“We expected you to learn something.”
“What?”
“That your decisions have consequences.”
Domenico leaned back.
“My daughter was the consequence?”
Helen’s composure tightened.
“You moved this family away from everything your father built.”
“So you chained Lily.”
“You keep reducing it to that.”
His eyes sharpened.
“Because that should be enough.”
Helen went silent.
Behind her, Richard stood at the window.
Domenico noticed the distance between his parents.
They were united.
But not comfortable.
That mattered.
The household review continued overnight.
Staff described previous punishments.
Not chains.
Smaller things.
Lily being made to sit alone while Ethan ate dessert.
Birthday toys temporarily removed.
Meals delayed because she “whined.”
Helen telling staff that Domenico wanted his daughter less indulged.
The pattern had begun three months earlier.
Domenico had been home for most of those months.
He simply had not seen it.
That realization hurt.
His housekeeper, Nina, stood before him twisting her fingers together.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
She inhaled.
Her eyes flicked toward Richard.
Then down.
“Mr. Richard said these were your instructions.”
“You believed him?”
Her face flushed.
“No.”
The answer surprised him.
“Then why?”
Nina’s voice became quieter.
“Because the last guard who challenged him was transferred the same day.”
Domenico looked at his father.
Richard did not deny it.
He still had enough old influence that staff feared him more than they trusted Domenico.
That was Domenico’s failure too.
He had allowed retired power to remain operational because confronting his father felt unnecessary.
Until Lily paid for it.
Then Nina produced a folder.
Helen had instructed her to document Lily’s behavior.
Tantrums.
Refused meals.
Crying.
“Why?”
“I was told it was for a pediatric consultation.”
Domenico opened the folder.
The reports had already been forwarded somewhere else.
A Carter Family Council address.
Three weeks earlier.

Long before the birthday.
His parents had begun building a case against his household before tonight’s punishment ever happened.
