Chapter 5

The council dossier was almost professional.
Dates.
Staff observations.
Photographs of messy rooms.
Descriptions of Lily crying after Domenico left for meetings.
Notes about her attachment to him.
A physician appointment she missed because his convoy returned late.
Individual truths arranged into a larger lie.
Domenico read every page.
Then found the conclusion.
DOMENICO CARTER’S HOUSEHOLD HAS BECOME UNSTABLE, CHILD-CENTERED, AND OPERATIONALLY DISTRACTED.
Richard entered while Domenico was reading.
“That sentence bother you?”
Domenico did not look up.
“The phrase ‘child-centered’ bothers you?”
“It does when a man responsible for hundreds of people forgets they exist every time his daughter cries.”
Domenico finally raised his eyes.
His voice stayed calm.
“You’ve been waiting to say that.”
“For years.”
Richard sat opposite him.
“You think this is punishment because I hate Lily.”
His gaze hardened.
“I love her.”
Domenico’s eyes turned cold.
“Don't use that word tonight.”
Richard’s nostrils flared.
But he continued.
“She is becoming the center of every decision.”
“She’s three.”
“You’re fifty.”
Silence.
Richard leaned closer.
“The family cannot be run by a man terrified his daughter may someday dislike him.”
The accusation hit because part of it contained truth.
After Lily’s mother died two years earlier, Domenico changed.
He declined risks he once took casually.
Spent more nights home.
Began questioning traditions he had inherited without thinking.
Richard saw weakness.
Domenico saw fatherhood.
The council dossier was designed to make everyone choose between those interpretations.
Then Domenico reached the final attachment.
A request for an emergency leadership review.
The meeting was scheduled for forty-eight hours later.
Richard’s name appeared as petitioner.
Two senior capos had signed.
Helen had signed as family elder.
Domenico’s eyes moved to the bottom.
A blank space remained for evidence from the birthday event.
Tonight had been meant to complete the case.
Richard watched him understand.
Then said quietly:
“You hit me in front of half the council.”
Domenico looked up.
Richard smiled.
“You gave me exactly what I needed.”
His phone vibrated.
The edited footage was already circulating among senior capos.

It began with Domenico striking his elderly father.
The chain around Lily’s ankle was outside the frame.
