Chapter 14

Michael had discovered the truth before he died.

The recording was made at a gas station forty miles outside Las Vegas.

His voice was tired.

But steady.

He explained that one of Richard’s men accidentally mentioned Domenico was still hospitalized and had not spoken to anyone.

Michael realized Helen lied about the approval.

He considered turning the convoy around.

Then made the choice that haunted everyone listening.

He continued.

Not because Richard ordered him.

Because two younger men in the convoy would have gone without him.

Michael believed he could bring them home.

He was wrong.

The recording ended with a message for Domenico.

“Don't spend your life trying to beat Dad at being Dad.”

Domenico lowered his head.

His hand covered his mouth.

Nobody spoke.

Lily was not in the room.

Neither was Ethan.

This recording belonged to the adults first.

Richard stared at the table.

For the first time, tears appeared in his eyes.

Helen watched him.

Her breathing shook.

“He knew.”

Richard whispered it.

Helen did not answer.

“He knew and still went.”

Domenico looked at his father.

“Yes.”

Richard’s voice cracked.

“Because of my men.”

“Yes.”

The old man pressed both hands against the table.

His shoulders bent.

For decades he had told himself Michael died obeying him.

The truth was worse.

Michael died protecting younger men from the consequences of Richard’s order.

Helen began crying.

Richard did not comfort her.

There was no alliance left between them capable of carrying the weight.

Later that afternoon, Lily saw Ethan sitting beside the broken blue bicycle.

The frame had been moved into the garage for evidence photographs.

Ethan touched the detached wheel.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily frowned.

“You broke it?”

“No.”

“Then why sorry?”

Ethan looked toward the house.

“Grandpa gave me your cake.”

Lily thought for a moment.

Then sat beside him.

“You can have cake.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“I don't want it.”

Lily leaned closer.

“Chocolate?”

A tiny laugh escaped him.

Domenico watched from the doorway.

Two children were trying to repair something adults had spent years breaking.

Then Lily pointed toward the bicycle.

“Can Daddy fix it?”

Ethan looked at Domenico.

Before Domenico could answer, the mechanic beside him whispered:

“The frame can be repaired.”

A pause.

“But Richard had the serial plate removed before he smashed it.”

May you like

Domenico’s eyes narrowed.

The bicycle had been tampered with before the punishment even began.
