Chapter 13

Richard lost his honorary patriarch title the following morning.
Domenico did not announce it dramatically.
The council secretary simply removed the designation from every operating document.
Richard’s legacy office was closed.
His estate credentials were disabled.
His security detail reduced to ordinary family protection.
His ability to direct personnel ended immediately.
The old man watched each change without speaking.
That silence was different now.
Not control.
Disbelief.
Helen lost all authority over Lily and Ethan.
No private visits.
No ability to direct staff.
No access to household schedules.
Any future contact with the children would depend on professional guidance and their guardians.
Richard stared at Domenico across the study.
“So this is your revenge.”
Domenico stood beside the window.
“No.”
Richard laughed once.
“You take my title, my house authority, my men—”
“You're still describing yourself.”
Richard stopped.
Domenico turned.
“My revenge would be making you feel what Lily felt chained outside while everyone watched.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
Domenico’s eyes remained cold.
“But she does not need me becoming you in her name.”
That landed harder than violence.
Richard looked away first.
The legal consequences moved separately.
Child-endangerment reports were made.
The forged electronic messages were preserved.
The altered historical records entered independent review.
Domenico also provided the complete birthday footage showing his own strike against Richard and his actions toward Helen.
His attorney warned him that protecting Lily explained his first intervention but did not erase every choice afterward.
Domenico accepted that.
Ethan struggled most.
He stopped eating birthday cake entirely.
Stopped asking about his father.
Then one afternoon he approached Domenico in the garden.
“Did Dad hate you?”
Domenico’s chest tightened.
“No.”
Ethan stared at the ground.
“How do you know?”
Domenico thought of the deleted voicemail.
Michael asking for him.
“I know because he trusted me enough to ask for help.”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“But you didn't come.”
Domenico did not defend himself with the truth.
“I didn't know.”
Ethan looked up.
That answer hurt both of them.
Then Rachel brought another recovered item from Michael’s belongings.
A small cassette recorder.
Michael had recorded one final message on the drive toward Nevada.

The first words were:
“If Domenico ever hears this, tell him I know Mom lied.”
