Chapter 1

Richard did not raise his voice again.

That frightened Mark more than the punch had.

The entrance hall had gone completely silent. Family guests stood frozen beside unopened birthday gifts while flames snapped inside the stone fireplace.

Richard kept Noah wrapped inside his overcoat.

The boy’s bare feet were red from the snow.

His dirty shirt was too thin for a Colorado winter, and one sleeve had torn almost completely away at the shoulder.

Richard’s eyes moved slowly from the child to Mark.

“How long has he been dressed like this?”

Mark wiped blood from his lip.

His breathing was still heavy, but irritation returned to his face.

“You're seeing one bad moment and turning it into a tragedy.”

Claudia pushed herself upright beside the overturned wrapping table.

“He destroys clothes when he throws tantrums.”

Richard looked at her.

Claudia stopped adjusting her dress.

It was not the anger in his face that silenced her.

There was almost none.

That was worse.

Richard called his private physician.

Then he looked toward the bodyguards.

“Nobody leaves.”

Mark’s head snapped up.

“You're locking your own family inside?”

Richard lowered his gaze to Noah.

“No.”

His thumb gently wiped melted snow from the boy’s cheek.

“I’m making sure nobody disappears before I understand why my grandson looks homeless inside a house I pay for.”

Mark’s jaw tightened.

Claudia crossed her arms.

“You've always spoiled him.”

Richard finally looked at her.

The silence lasted long enough for Claudia’s confidence to weaken.

Then Noah tugged weakly on Richard’s vest.

“Grandpa?”

Richard immediately lowered himself.

“What is it?”

Noah’s eyes moved toward his father.

Mark’s hand tightened around the edge of the broken wine trolley.

Richard saw it.

Noah saw it too.

The boy’s breathing became shallow.

Richard placed one hand behind his back.

“You can tell me.”

Noah swallowed.

His voice was barely audible.

“Daddy said Mommy died because I was bad.”

Nobody moved.

Mark’s face changed.

May you like

Richard slowly stood.

For the first time that night, the punishment Richard had promised stopped being about what happened in the snow.
