Chapter 12

Sarah had written the letter three days before she died.
Richard recognized her handwriting immediately.
She thanked him for loving Noah.
Then she told him why she planned to leave Colorado.
Not simply because Mark was cheating.
Because she was afraid of what the Bellacorte family environment was teaching her son.
Men who never admitted mistakes.
Rooms that became quiet when Richard entered.
People treating fear as respect.
Sarah wrote:
I want Noah to know love without owing anybody obedience for it.
Richard read the sentence twice.
Claudia watched him.
For the first time, her cruelty had found something that could actually hurt him.
“You see?”
Her voice softened with satisfaction.
“Sarah wasn't running from me.”
Richard folded the letter.
“No.”
His eyes lifted.
“She was running from all of us.”
Claudia’s smile faded.
Mark stared at his father.
Richard did not defend himself.
That unsettled both of them.
Claudia had expected anger.
Excuses.
Denial.
Instead Richard accepted the wound.
Then he asked:
“How did you get this?”
Claudia looked toward Mark.
Mark’s eyes widened.
Sarah had never mailed the letter.
It should have remained inside her locked desk after her death.
Only three people had access to that room.
Mark.
Richard.
And the estate house manager.
Not Claudia.
Richard’s gaze hardened.
“Who gave it to you?”
Claudia said nothing.
The balance changed again.
Richard called the former house manager.
The answer came quickly.
He had not given Claudia anything.
But weeks after Sarah died, Mark ordered Sarah’s desk emptied.
Mark looked confused.
“I boxed everything.”
“Who collected the boxes?”
The house manager hesitated.
Then gave them a name nobody in the room expected.
Richard’s longtime consigliere, Vincent Moretti.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.
The secret surrounding Sarah’s death had reached deeper into his inner circle than Mark and Claudia.
