Chapter 21

Noah met Mark in person when he was thirteen.

Not for the first time in memory.

For the first time since the birthday in the snow.

The meeting took place in a therapist’s office.

No Bellacorte property.

No guards inside.

Richard waited two rooms away.

He hated every detail.

Useful.

Mark arrived first.

Noah second.

Mark stood.

Noah stayed near the door.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

Mark looked older.

His hair gray at the sides.

Noah stared.

“You look Grandpa.”

Mark almost laughed.

“That’s unfortunate.”

Noah did not.

Then:

“Why did you tell me Mommy died because I cried?”

No warm-up.

Good.

Mark’s face changed.

He looked down.

“Because you kept asking questions about her.”

Noah waited.

“And I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“Of what you might remember.”

There it was.

Noah sat.

Mark continued.

“You were little.”

Another pause.

“You repeated things you heard.”

Noah’s jaw tightened.

“So you made me think people leave if I’m bad.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought fear would make you quieter.”

Silence.

Richard, listening through the approved feed, closed his eyes.

Mark continued.

“I also told myself I was managing your behavior.”

Noah looked disgusted.

“You were three.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Mommy didn't die because me.”

“Yes.”

That answer mattered more than every explanation.

Noah leaned back.

“Did you love me?”

Mark’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Then how?”

The family question.

Again.

Mark took a long time.

“I loved you.”

Another pause.

“And I still treated you in ways that hurt you because I cared more about protecting myself.”

Noah looked away.

“That’s bad love.”

“Yes.”

No defense.

Good.

Then Noah asked:

“Did Claudia make you?”

Mark swallowed.

“She controlled me with the recording.”

“That's not answer.”

Noah had become very good at this.

“No.”

Mark looked at him.

“She did not make me say those things to you.”

Another pause.

“She did not make me ignore what was happening in the house.”

Noah nodded.

Correct.

At thirty minutes Noah asked:

“Can we leave?”

The therapist said yes.

Mark remained seated.

No hug.

No request for another meeting.

At the door Noah stopped.

“Do you have pictures of Mommy?”

Mark looked surprised.

“Yes.”

“Before you cheated.”

The sentence landed.

“Yes.”

“I want copies.”

“Okay.”

“Not pictures with Claudia.”

Mark nodded.

“Okay.”

Two weeks later a sealed digital archive arrived through the therapist.

Hundreds of photographs.

Sarah laughing.

Sarah holding baby Noah.

Sarah angry at someone outside the frame.

Sarah asleep on a couch.

Not saint.

Not victim.

Person.

Noah spent hours looking.

One image showed Mark beside her.

Both laughing.

Noah stared longest at that one.

Richard noticed.

Said nothing.

History became harder again.

Before everything went wrong, something had been real.

May you like

That did not excuse what came later.

It only refused to make the past simpler than it was.
