Chapter 22

Claudia wrote Noah when he was fifteen.

The first direct request in twelve years.

Richard wanted the answer to be no.

He did not get a vote anymore.

Not the deciding one.

That mattered.

Noah’s therapist reviewed the letter.

His attorney confirmed there was no contact restriction preventing written communication under the current circumstances.

Noah chose to read it.

Alone first.

Then he brought it to Richard.

“She says she loved Dad.”

Richard looked at him.

“I believe she did.”

Noah frowned.

“You hate her.”

“Yes.”

Honest.

“Still believe.”

“Yes.”

Those facts could coexist.

Noah handed him the letter.

Not for permission.

Because he wanted Richard to read.

Claudia wrote that Sarah’s death had begun as a confrontation she believed she could control.

She admitted grabbing Sarah.

Admitted the push.

Admitted helping move the vehicles afterward.

Then she wrote:

None of that explains what I later did to you.

Noah read the next part aloud.

“I resented you because you were Sarah’s son.”

His voice hardened.

Claudia had written that Noah’s grief irritated her.

His questions frightened her.

His presence reminded Mark of Sarah.

And reminded Claudia too.

She wrote:

I began treating your needs as manipulation because that made it easier to justify ignoring them.

Missed medical appointments.

Food.

Clothes.

The residential application.

Then the snow.

Noah stopped.

Richard’s hands had become fists.

He opened them.

Noah noticed.

“Still angry?”

“Yes.”

“Would you hit her now?”

The question was not theoretical.

Richard took time.

“No.”

Noah studied him.

“Want to?”

Richard almost lied.

Then:

“Sometimes.”

“Why not?”

“Wanting to hurt someone and choosing to are different.”

Noah looked at the letter.

“Claudia wanted Mom stop.”

“Yes.”

“And pushed.”

“Yes.”

“Dad wanted secret safe.”

“Yes.”

“And lied.”

“Yes.”

Noah nodded.

Action.

Again.

At the bottom Claudia wrote:

I am not asking you to call me family.

That line mattered.

Noah folded the paper.

“Do I answer?”

Richard’s old instinct appeared.

No.

Then he smiled without humor.

“You know the answer.”

“My choice.”

“Yes.”

Noah wrote nothing for seven months.

Then one sentence.

I REMEMBER THE SNOW.

Claudia replied through the approved channel.

I know.

Noah became angry.

“What does that mean?”

Richard did not interpret.

“Ask her if you want.”

Noah did.

HOW?

Claudia’s answer came later.

Because I saw you outside after I pushed you there.

I knew you were barefoot.

I went back inside anyway.

Noah stared.

The last ambiguity disappeared.

Not an accidental shove followed by ignorance.

Choice afterward.

He did not respond again.

Not that year.

Not the next.

Richard never asked him to.

Claudia remained outside Noah’s life.

May you like

But no longer outside his understanding.

Those were different things.
