Chapter 10

The complete recording lasted eleven minutes.
Mark had hidden the backup on an encrypted drive inside his office safe because he had finally decided he wanted leverage of his own.
Richard listened once.
Only once.
The partial clip had made Mark sound like Sarah’s killer.
The full recording told something different.
Sarah had followed Mark and Claudia after discovering the affair.
They argued beside Mark’s car at a mountain turnout.
Sarah told Mark she was leaving him.
She would take Noah.
She would tell Richard about the hidden debts.
Then Sarah turned to walk toward her SUV.
Claudia followed.
On the recording, Mark’s voice shook.
“You grabbed her.”
Claudia answered:
“She was going to ruin everything.”
Mark:
“You pushed her.”
Silence.
Then Claudia:
“She slipped.”
Mark:
“You pushed her toward the road.”
Claudia:
“And you hit her with the car.”
That was the sentence from the shorter clip.
But the rest changed everything.
Mark shouted:
“Because you shoved her in front of me!”
Richard stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
The accident reconstruction later supported the sequence.
Sarah had fallen or stumbled into the roadway directly in front of Mark’s moving car.
Mark struck her.
Then, instead of calling immediately for help and telling the truth, he panicked.
Claudia convinced him that nobody would believe Sarah’s death was accidental once the affair became known.
They moved Sarah’s vehicle.
They shaped the scene to resemble a single-car crash.
They lied.
Together.
The major betrayal was not one murderer and one innocent accomplice.
Claudia had initiated the fatal confrontation.
Mark had caused the final injury.
Then both chose themselves over Sarah.
Richard looked at his son after the recording ended.
Mark’s face was wet with tears.
“I didn't want her dead.”
Richard’s voice came out almost inaudibly.
“But you wanted your life intact afterward.”
Mark closed his eyes.
Richard continued:
“So you buried the truth with her.”
Then another detail from the recording returned to him.
Claudia had said something before the argument ended.
“If Noah keeps talking when he gets older, we handle him too.”
Richard slowly turned toward Mark.
Mark stopped crying.
May you like
He had heard it too.
And he had still brought Claudia into Noah’s home.
