Chapter 14

Richard did not lie.

“Daddy has to answer for what he did.”

Noah’s eyes filled.

“Forever?”

“I don't know.”

Richard sat beside him.

“But nobody is sending you away.”

Noah looked at the framed drawing.

“Promise?”

Richard’s hand slowly covered the boy’s.

“I promise you will always know where your home is.”

The final family confrontation happened two weeks later.

No birthday guests.

No dinner.

No spectacle.

Mark sat on one side of Richard’s study.

Claudia on the other.

Their attorneys remained nearby.

The full recording and supporting evidence had already been turned over through proper channels.

Mark had lost his business roles.

Claudia had lost access to the lodge and Noah.

The legal consequences would take time.

Richard did not pretend otherwise.

Claudia looked at him.

“So this is your small punishment?”

Richard remained silent.

Her breathing quickened.

“You're going to sit there and let outsiders decide what happens to your own son?”

Richard looked toward Mark.

Mark lowered his eyes.

Richard finally spoke.

“For years, people thought being close to me meant rules became optional.”

His gaze moved to Claudia.

“You believed it.”

Then Mark.

“You depended on it.”

Then the empty chair where Vincent once sat during family meetings.

“And I taught all of you to expect it.”

Claudia’s fingers tightened around her handbag.

“You're giving up control.”

Richard’s expression barely changed.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m taking it away from the people who abused it.”

Mark inhaled shakily.

“What about Noah?”

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“What about him?”

“He’s my son.”

The room fell completely still.

Mark’s voice cracked.

“Are you taking him from me?”

Richard stared at him.

May you like

Then said the one thing Mark had never expected.

“That decision isn't mine anymore.”
