Chapter 17

Five years after the garden party, Noah was eight.

We hosted another fundraiser outside.

Same terrace.

Same dessert table.

Different chairs.

Sophie arrived with Victoria.

She was fourteen now.

Tall.

Quiet.

Still called me Raffaele.

Good.

Noah saw an empty seat beside her.

He dragged it closer.

Sat.

Nobody interpreted anything.

No hierarchy.

No family announcement.

Just two children sharing cake.

Margaret walked past carrying plates.

Noah jumped up.

“I’ll help.”

She handed him two.

Then Sophie took two more.

Victoria watched.

For half a second, I saw something move across her face.

Memory.

Regret.

Then she smiled.

Not because Sophie was serving.

Because nobody in the room thought serving changed who she was.

That was the lesson we had all taken too long to learn.

Noah returned to the table.

Sophie stole frosting from his plate.

He complained.

Normal.

I stood several yards away greeting guests.

Exactly where I had been the first time.

But now I kept looking back.

Not from fear.

Habit corrected.

Years earlier Victoria used the minutes when my attention was elsewhere to rearrange my family.

Chair by chair.

Plate by plate.

Introduction by introduction.

I had thought protecting Noah meant standing between him and obvious danger.

Sometimes it does.

But sometimes protection means noticing who keeps moving his chair when you’re not looking.

Noah caught my eye.

“Dad!”

“Yes?”

“Stop staring!”

Sophie laughed.

I smiled.

“Fine.”

I turned back to the guests.

Behind me, two children kept eating dessert.

No one came first.

No one came second.

May you like

They were simply there.

And this time, that was the family.
