Chapter 3

Margaret brought me a notebook that night.
Not Victoria’s.
Hers.
Household records.
Meals.
Room changes.
Guest arrangements.
She started writing details after the third incident because something felt wrong.
Good instincts.
I read.
May 12 — Noah’s chair moved.
May 18 — Sophie seated beside Raffaele’s place before he arrived.
May 23 — Victoria instructs staff: serve Sophie first.
May 27 — Noah told to wait beside pantry because “family photographs first.”
My hand tightened.
I had attended that event.
I remembered photographs.
Victoria.
Sophie.
Me.
Noah appeared in none.
I had assumed he was with his nanny.
Margaret had asked where he was.
Victoria said tired.
Lie.
He had been standing near the pantry holding folded napkins.
I closed my eyes.
“How did I miss this?”
Margaret answered carefully.
“Because she did it when you were greeting people.”
Exactly like today.
Victoria understood my habits.
At events, I worked the perimeter first.
Capos.
Guests.
Security.
Then family.
She used those minutes.
Small enough actions that by the time I arrived, the room already looked settled.
A chair here.
A child there.
A plate moved.
A photograph taken.
Reality established before I looked.

Power does not always need confrontation.
Sometimes it arranges furniture before the powerful person enters.
