Chapter 10

That was the major break.

Grant and Eleanor had not blocked the scan because they believed medical care was unnecessary.

They blocked it because they knew it was necessary.

The concierge obstetrician had reviewed Sofia’s screenshots after the fall.

He warned Grant that the combination of bruising, elevated blood pressure, reduced fetal growth, and possible trauma required proper evaluation.

He also told Grant that no ethical physician could determine safety from screenshots and a home Doppler.

Eleanor understood that.

She had been the one who recommended the consultant.

But the consultant said something else.

“If there was any chance the fall resulted from interpersonal violence, she needed to be evaluated privately.”

Grant asked what would happen if Sofia disclosed abuse.

The doctor refused to speculate beyond explaining standard safety procedures.

That conversation occurred two days before Sofia moved her final ultrasound to the elite center.

Three earlier clues suddenly fit.

Grant obsessively checked Sofia’s blood pressure while claiming doctors were overreacting.

Eleanor called the clinic asking whether the scan had shown placental damage.

And Grant specifically asked Lorenzo whether Dr. Pierce had measured the retroplacental area.

They were not ignorant.

They were terrified the scan would document a medical consequence tied to the fall.

But that still did not explain how Grant knew about the social worker.

Sofia finally did.

She had hidden a small appointment card inside the pocket of her gray cardigan.

The card listed:

ULTRASOUND — 10:30

SOCIAL WORK — AFTER SCAN

The cardigan disappeared from her closet for one day.

Eleanor returned it folded.

Sofia had assumed housekeeping found it.

Now she understood.

Grant and Eleanor discovered that the ultrasound was also Sofia’s planned exit point.

From that moment, the scan became dangerous to them for two reasons.

It could document Sofia’s condition.

And it could get her alone with people prepared to help her leave.

The garden was not an argument that spiraled out of control.

Grant had confiscated Sofia’s phone and keys that morning.

Eleanor helped keep staff away.

When Sofia tried to walk through the garden gate, Grant physically stopped her.

He forced her into the loose planting soil to prevent her from leaving until the appointment passed.

The misogynistic remark about the baby being “just a girl” was real cruelty.

But it was also a distraction from the truth.

They were not trying to save money.

They were trying to keep Sofia isolated.

Lorenzo looked at his daughter after the full timeline was reconstructed.

“You knew you were leaving him that day.”

“Yes.”

“And you still called me to drive you.”

Sofia nodded.

“Why?”

“Because I thought if I could just get into your car, he wouldn’t stop me.”

Lorenzo felt the irony immediately.

His daughter had feared his violence.

May you like

But at the last possible moment, she had still trusted his presence as the one boundary Grant would not cross.

Grant crossed it anyway.
