Chapter 2

The medical center admitted Sofia for observation.

Her blood pressure was high enough to concern the obstetric team but not yet high enough to require immediate delivery.

The ultrasound showed the baby girl was alive, active, and smaller than expected.

Blood flow through the placenta needed repeat monitoring.

The physician explained everything twice.

Sofia listened quietly.

Lorenzo listened differently.

He asked dates.

When had the concern started?

When had the office called?

Who had canceled what?

Sofia’s obstetrician, Dr. Hannah Pierce, finally looked at him.

“Mr. Bellucci, right now I need to speak with Sofia alone.”

Lorenzo stopped.

That was not something people often told him.

Sofia looked at him.

“It’s okay.”

He left.

Twenty-five minutes later, a hospital social worker entered the room.

Lorenzo saw her through the glass panel.

His stomach tightened.

When Sofia finally let him return, she was sitting upright with both hands around a paper cup of water.

“Dad, don’t do anything.”

He pulled the chair closer.

“What happened?”

“Promise me.”

“I’m not promising before I know.”

“That’s exactly why I didn’t tell you.”

The sentence landed hard.

Sofia looked down.

Grant had been controlling her movements for months.

At first it looked like concern.

He drove her everywhere.

He handled appointments.

He reminded her to rest.

Then he began deciding which appointments mattered.

He complained about the cost of specialists even though money was not the problem.

He took her car keys when they argued.

He insisted on passwords to her phone because married people should not have secrets.

Eleanor reinforced everything.

Pregnant women were emotional.

Doctors overtested.

The Bellucci family wasted money on private medicine because they were addicted to special treatment.

Lorenzo stared at his daughter.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

Sofia gave a tired laugh.

“And say what? ‘Dad, my husband took my keys’?”

“Yes.”

“And then what?”

Lorenzo knew the answer.

He would have arrived with men.

Grant would have known she told him.

Everything would have escalated.

Sofia continued.

“I kept thinking I could fix it myself.”

That was a Bellucci habit too.

Dr. Pierce returned.

She explained that the clinic had documented repeated appointment interference.

Someone had called saying Sofia was changing doctors.

Someone had also logged into Sofia’s patient portal and canceled a scan.

The portal showed access from Sofia’s own account.

Sofia looked horrified.

“Grant knows my password.”

Lorenzo leaned back.

May you like

The garden had not been the beginning.

It had been the first time he saw what had already been happening.
