Chapter 6

Lorenzo’s anger shifted direction.
Part of it remained with Grant.
Part of it turned inward.
Sofia had needed a safe exit and believed her father was too dangerous to include.
He wanted to argue.
He could not.
Three years earlier, when a contractor cheated one of Lorenzo’s companies, Lorenzo had personally confronted him in front of half the staff.
The story became family legend.
Five years earlier, a cousin insulted Margot’s husband and lost two teeth.
Lorenzo had not thrown the punch.
He had laughed about it.
Sofia had grown up learning that men in her family called escalation protection.
Now she had built an escape plan around avoiding both her husband and her father.
That realization changed his next decision.
He hired no private men to follow Grant.
He made no threats.
He let lawyers and investigators handle what belonged to them.
Grant hated that more than rage.
He began calling mutual friends.
Sofia was hormonal.
Lorenzo had always hated him.
The garden incident was a misunderstanding that got physical only after Lorenzo arrived.
Eleanor repeated the story socially.
She claimed Sofia had been helping with a raised planting bed, became upset, and exaggerated what happened.
Then an estate gardener contacted Sofia.
His name was Patrick Donnelly.
He had worked there two years.
Patrick had seen Grant ordering staff away from the garden shortly before Lorenzo arrived.
He had also seen Grant empty bags of loose topsoil around Sofia after she refused to go back inside.
Patrick had not intervened.
That ashamed him.
But he would give a statement.
Sofia read his message and cried.
Not because it proved anything.
Because someone outside the family had seen her.
For weeks Grant had told her she was overreacting.
Eleanor said pregnancy made women irrational.
Patrick’s account restored something evidence could not measure.
Confidence in her own memory.
Then Eleanor made a mistake.
She called Dr. Pierce’s office again.
This time staff documented the call in detail.
Eleanor demanded to know whether the follow-up ultrasound had identified “placental damage.”
The phrase alarmed Dr. Pierce.
Sofia had never been diagnosed with placental damage.
And nobody at the clinic had used those words with Eleanor.

When Lorenzo heard that, one question replaced all the others.
Why was Eleanor expecting the scan to find it?
