Chapter 11

The twist did not make the next decisions easier.

It made them heavier.

Sofia blamed herself for not leaving after the stair fall.

Lorenzo blamed himself for creating a family culture where she believed asking him for help meant unleashing retaliation.

Margot blamed Lorenzo too.

“You taught all of us that asking for help and declaring war were the same thing.”

He did not argue.

That was new.

Eleanor’s role also became harder to understand.

She had spent years caring for laboring women.

She knew exactly how dangerous pregnancy complications could become.

Yet she helped her son block care.

When Sofia’s lawyer obtained the concierge physician’s written summary, Eleanor’s attorney stopped claiming she believed the pregnancy was low-risk.

Instead, the defense shifted.

Eleanor had been protecting Grant from a “false domestic-violence narrative.”

That made her motive clearer.

She had chosen her adult son’s reputation over Sofia’s safety.

The baby’s safety too.

But the truth alone could not settle everything.

Grant still denied intentionally causing the fall.

He admitted blocking doors.

Taking keys.

Monitoring passwords.

He insisted those actions came from fear that Sofia’s father was turning her against him.

Eleanor claimed she believed Sofia was being manipulated by the Bellucci family.

Their attorneys challenged the meaning of individual records.

And Lorenzo had his own conduct to answer for.

Multiple estate employees had seen him punch Grant after Grant swung.

They had also seen him slap Eleanor after she grabbed Sofia.

Lorenzo’s lawyer explained that defense of another person could be relevant.

It did not give him permission to rewrite what happened.

“I won’t.”

Sofia looked at him.

Months earlier she might not have believed that.

The largest emotional damage came one evening when she asked:

“If you hadn’t shown up, what do you think he would’ve done?”

Lorenzo wanted to promise Grant would have eventually let her go.

He could not.

Sofia placed one hand over her stomach.

“That’s what I keep thinking too.”

The baby moved beneath her palm.

Sofia looked down.

Then she made another decision.

Grant would not be present at the birth.

Whatever rights or parenting arrangements came later would be handled through legal and therapeutic channels.

The delivery room would belong to Sofia.

Not to the conflict.
