Chapter 8

Sofia made the irreversible decision herself.

She filed a formal domestic-violence report.

Not because Lorenzo told her.

He deliberately remained outside the attorney’s office while she decided.

Patrick provided his statement.

The medical center preserved portal logs and call records.

Dr. Pierce documented the prior bruising, reported fall, and appointment interference.

Sofia also authorized the hospital social worker to share records as legally appropriate.

Then she filed for legal separation and requested temporary protective conditions.

The process did not resolve overnight.

Grant retained counsel and denied deliberately harming her.

He argued that the garden confrontation came after weeks of marital conflict and that Lorenzo’s arrival escalated everything.

Sofia expected that.

What she did not expect was how much she grieved.

She had married Grant two years earlier.

There had been good mornings.

Bad jokes.

Takeout on the couch.

A honeymoon in Maine.

The first time he felt the baby kick, Grant cried.

Abuse had not erased every loving memory.

That made leaving harder, not easier.

Lorenzo saw her crying one night and nearly said Grant did not deserve tears.

He stopped himself.

Sofia noticed.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Not telling me how to feel.”

The next day Lorenzo removed Grant from the Bellucci businesses permanently following the employment review.

The company did not accuse him of domestic violence in the termination documents.

It cited policy violations involving unauthorized access to personal medical information through corporate systems and misuse of company devices.

Grant reacted through his attorney.

Then he called Lorenzo directly.

Lorenzo answered once.

“You think firing me solves this?”

“No.”

“You think Sofia can raise that baby without me?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then Grant said something strange.

“Did Pierce measure the retroplacental area?”

Lorenzo frowned.

“What?”

Grant immediately disconnected.

Lorenzo called Dr. Pierce.

She became quiet when he repeated the phrase.

The retroplacental area was where certain findings associated with placental bleeding might sometimes be evaluated.

It was not terminology most non-medical spouses casually used.

Grant had not simply searched general pregnancy risks.

Someone had been advising him medically.
