Chapter 10

Helena had never been trying simply to make Marina into a servant.

The work was part of something larger.

She was trying to manufacture a version of Marina that everyone—including Damiano—would eventually believe.

Weak.

Unstable.

Ungrateful.

Unable to manage the newborn.

Dependent on constant supervision.

And dangerous whenever anyone challenged her.

The forensic timeline proved how carefully the pieces had been arranged.

First Helena removed the night nurse, guaranteeing Marina would get less sleep.

Then she canceled recovery services and increased Marina’s household workload.

When Marina became exhausted, Helena photographed the exhaustion.

She restricted Marina’s movements using fake Damiano authorizations.

When Marina panicked at the gate, Helena described the panic as postpartum instability.

She took Marina’s phone.

When Marina became desperate because she could not reach her husband, Helena documented emotional outbursts.

She intercepted messages in both directions so Marina believed Damiano approved the restrictions while Damiano believed his wife was recovering normally.

Then Helena prepared the lake guesthouse.

Her plan was not to abandon Marina.

It was to separate her from Nico.

Temporarily at first.

That word appeared repeatedly in Helena’s drafts.

Temporary stabilization.

Temporary maternal rest.

Temporary infant placement.

The language sounded medical.

It was not.

No doctor had recommended any of it.

Helena believed that once Marina was hospitalized from exhaustion—or frightened enough to leave the estate without permission—she could persuade Damiano that Marina needed to recover away from the baby.

Helena would take Nico to the guesthouse.

Staff would follow the existing “Damiano-approved” care plan.

And Marina would face a brutal choice.

Submit to Helena’s conditions if she wanted unrestricted access to her son.

Or resist and produce more evidence that she was unstable.

The suitcase had been packed because Helena expected to leave with Nico that night.

The nursery had already been prepared.

The security had already been activated.

The newborn’s bag was being packed.

She had seen Marina deteriorating and understood that the hospital was becoming unavoidable.

Instead of stopping, she prepared to use the hospitalization.

Three clues finally locked together.

Marina’s first plea had not been help me.

It had been get me and the baby out of here.

Because she already believed the estate had become somewhere she could not leave freely.

The fake gate orders showed Helena had been using Damiano’s authority as a cage.

And the prepacked suitcase showed Helena expected Marina’s collapse before Damiano ever witnessed it.

The twist was not that Helena wanted Marina gone.

She wanted Marina present, frightened, dependent, and stripped of enough authority that Helena could become the real decision-maker over Nico.

She believed Damiano’s wife could be disciplined.

She believed Damiano’s child belonged to the Ricci structure before he belonged to his mother.

And she believed Damiano would eventually accept the arrangement if she first made it look necessary.

Marina listened to the findings beside Caroline.

When they finished, she did not cry.

She asked one question.

“Did she ever think Damiano would discover I didn’t agree?”

Caroline answered quietly.

“She appears to have been counting on you believing he did agree.”

Marina looked toward her husband.

That was the wound beneath everything.

Helena had not only trapped Marina physically.

She had almost destroyed the marriage by making each spouse believe the other had chosen silence.
