Chapter 13

Marina did not return to the estate.
Not after the hospital.
Not after Helena was gone.
Not after Damiano replaced half the administrative structure.
She rented a quiet house twenty minutes away.
Damiano could have bought it.
Marina refused.
So he did something harder.
He let her sign the lease herself.
He visited.
He did not move in automatically.
For the first month, he slept there only when she asked.
That arrangement became the first real test of their marriage after Helena.
One night Nico finally fell asleep after nearly two hours of fussing.
Damiano entered the kitchen.
Marina was standing beside the sink.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
He started to reach for her.
She stepped back without thinking.
Both of them froze.
Marina looked ashamed.
Damiano shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“Don’t apologize for that.”
She looked down.
“I know you didn’t do it.”
“But you thought I approved.”
“For nine days.”
Damiano did not defend himself.
Marina continued.
“Every time a guard told me no, I thought it was you.”
“I know.”
“Every time Helena said you wanted me downstairs—”
“I know.”
“When my texts went unanswered—”
His face tightened.
“I know.”
Marina looked at him.
“You were twenty yards away.”
That sentence hurt more than blame.
Because it was true.
Damiano had not abused her.
He had not trapped her.
He had not ordered any of it.
But he had built a life where information stopped reaching him because everyone assumed his mother could speak in his name.
“I can’t change those nine days,” he said.
“No.”
“What can I do?”
Marina looked toward Nico’s bassinet.
“Stop assuming protection means you make every decision.”
Damiano almost smiled from the bitter irony.
His mother had believed exactly that.
“I can try.”
“No.”
Marina shook her head.
“Do it.”
May you like
He nodded.
“All right.”
