Chapter 15

Nico turned one on a quiet Sunday.

There was no enormous Ricci celebration.

Marina did not want one.

So they held the birthday at the rented house.

Twenty people.

A small cake.

No capos conducting business in corners.

No formal seating.

No Helena.

Damiano’s bodyguards stayed outside unless needed.

Nico spent most of the afternoon ignoring expensive gifts and trying to tear wrapping paper into edible-sized pieces.

Marina looked healthy again.

Not the forced brightness people praised because it made recovery convenient.

Actually healthy.

She slept.

Worked part-time when she wanted.

Left the house without asking anyone.

Changed plans without explaining them.

The first time she drove through the Ricci estate gate alone months earlier, the guard had opened it automatically.

Marina cried afterward.

Not because anything happened.

Because nothing did.

Nobody stopped her.

Nobody called inside.

Nobody asked for authorization.

The gate simply opened.

Damiano had understood then how low the standard for freedom had become during those nine days.

After Nico’s birthday guests left, Marina and Damiano cleaned the kitchen together.

He held up a stack of dish towels.

“Where do these go?”

Marina stared at him.

“You’ve lived forty-seven years and still don’t know where towels go?”

“I had staff.”

“You still have staff.”

“Yes, but apparently I’m becoming dangerously normal.”

She laughed.

He liked hearing it.

Later, Nico fell asleep against Damiano’s chest.

Marina sat beside them.

The marriage had survived.

Not untouched.

Survived.

Helena no longer controlled their home, their staff, Marina’s movement, or Nico’s care.

The false orders had been exposed.

The legal case was finished.

The security system that allowed Helena to borrow Damiano’s authority had been dismantled.

Marina no longer believed silence from her husband meant agreement with someone else.

Everything central had an answer now.

Except one thing.

The Ricci estate remained empty of them.

Damiano still owned it.

Still worked there.

Still returned there for meetings.

But Marina had never moved back.

He had never asked her to.

That night, while he put Nico into the crib, Marina stood in the doorway.

“Your security team called earlier.”

Damiano looked over.

“Problem?”

“No.”

She hesitated.

“They asked whether they should keep our old bedroom closed permanently.”

He said nothing.

“What did you tell them?”

“I didn’t answer.”

Damiano nodded.

“Okay.”

Marina studied him.

“You’re not going to ask what that means?”

“No.”

“Why?”

He looked toward their sleeping son.

“Because it’s your home only if you choose it.”

Marina remained in the doorway for a moment.

Then she switched off the hallway light.

She did not tell him whether she would ever return to the estate.

Damiano did not ask again.

May you like

For the first time, leaving that question entirely in her hands felt less like losing control.

It felt like finally understanding what home was supposed to mean.
