Chapter 11

Damiano did not confront Helena privately.
She requested it.
He refused.
Their only conversation happened in Caroline’s office with lawyers present.
Helena entered wearing a dark suit instead of the formal loungewear she had ruled the estate in.
She looked older.
Damiano felt no satisfaction.
“Why?” he asked.
Helena folded her hands.
“You already decided what you think.”
“I asked why.”
She looked at him.
“Because you were disappearing.”
Damiano frowned.
“Into what?”
“Her.”
His expression became unreadable.
Helena continued.
“You stopped listening to family after you married. You changed traditions because Marina didn’t like them. You left dinners early. You canceled meetings when she was pregnant.”
“My wife was pregnant.”
“You built your life around her discomfort.”
Damiano stared.
Helena leaned forward.
“Then the baby came, and suddenly the entire house existed around whether Marina had slept, eaten, cried, rested—”
“Yes.”
His answer stopped her.
“Yes, Helena. She had just given birth.”
Helena’s mouth tightened.
“A family cannot function when every feeling becomes an emergency.”
“So you created an emergency.”
“I created structure.”
“You trapped my wife.”
“I protected your son.”
“You separated him from his mother.”
“I planned to give her time to recover.”
“She asked for rest. You gave her laundry.”
Helena looked away.
For the first time, her logic had nowhere graceful to go.
Damiano continued.
“You wanted to prove she couldn’t care for Nico.”
“I wanted you to see what was happening.”
“You made it happen.”
Silence.
There it was.
Motive.
Not money.
Not inheritance.
Not hatred.
Helena believed Marina had displaced the old family hierarchy.
She believed motherhood gave Marina too much influence over Damiano.
So she tried to prove that Marina could not manage without the structure Helena controlled.
Helena genuinely believed she was restoring order.
That belief did not excuse anything.
It explained why she had been able to hurt Marina for days without viewing herself as cruel.
To Helena, suffering was evidence that Marina needed more control.
Damiano stood.
“You told staff my wife couldn’t leave her own home.”
Helena looked at him.
“You gave me authority.”
“I gave you access.”
May you like
He opened the conference-room door.
“You turned it into ownership.”
