Chapter 6

Marina’s phone provided another piece.

She had not lost it.

Helena had taken it.

Not permanently.

That would have been too obvious.

Every afternoon, Helena collected Marina’s phone for “rest hours.”

She said screens interfered with postpartum sleep.

Sometimes Marina received it back at dinner.

Sometimes after.

Damiano looked at the message history.

Several texts Marina believed she had sent him never arrived.

Drafts remained unsent.

One read:

I need you to come upstairs. Your mother won’t let the nurse back in.

Another:

I’m dizzy again and she says the doctor is being dramatic.

Another:

Please tell the gate I’m allowed to leave.

Damiano read the last one three times.

Marina sat across from him.

“I thought you saw those.”

“I didn’t.”

“She said you were busy.”

“I was.”

“That’s different.”

He looked up.

She was right.

He had been in the house most of those days.

Twenty yards away.

Holding meetings.

Believing Helena was helping his wife recover.

Marina continued.

“She would sometimes answer you for me.”

Damiano frowned.

“What?”

“When you texted asking if I was okay.”

His stomach dropped.

He remembered responses.

Tired but fine.

Nico fed. Going to sleep.

Your mother is taking good care of us.

He looked at Marina.

“You didn’t write those?”

“No.”

There was the second major structural clue.

Helena had not simply controlled Marina’s access to him.

She had manufactured reassurance in the other direction.

Marina believed Damiano knew.

Damiano believed Marina was fine.

Helena stood between both beliefs.

That evening, Damiano stopped referring to what happened as “my mother mistreating Marina.”

The phrase was too small.

May you like

Someone had inserted herself into a marriage and used the husband’s authority against the wife while using the wife’s silence to reassure the husband.

That required planning.
