Chapter 9

The lake guesthouse records finally explained part of Helena’s suitcase.
Three weeks before Nico was born, Helena ordered one bedroom converted into a nursery.
She told staff it was for “family overflow.”
Nobody questioned it.
A crib was delivered.
A changing table.
Formula supplies even though Marina planned to breastfeed.
Postpartum care items.
An infant monitor.
Then, three days before Marina collapsed, Helena asked a private nurse whether she could take a temporary overnight assignment at the guesthouse.
The nurse declined because she was already booked elsewhere.
Helena contacted another.
Caroline placed the records on the table.
“She was planning for someone to stay there with Nico.”
Damiano stared at the dates.
“Before Marina got worse.”
“Yes.”
The guesthouse had also received copies of a proposed care schedule.
Marina’s name appeared only twice.
Maternal visit as medically appropriate.
No unsupervised overnight care until stability improves.
Damiano’s entire body went rigid.
“Who wrote that?”
Metadata traced it to Helena’s tablet.
No doctor had approved it.
No court had approved it.
No parent had approved it.
Yet the document looked formal enough that household staff assumed somebody had.
Then came a folder labeled:
POSTPARTUM INCIDENTS — M.R.
Inside were photographs.
Marina asleep on a couch.
Marina crying at breakfast.
Marina leaving laundry unfolded.
Marina holding Nico while sitting on the bathroom floor because she was dizzy.
Marina raising her voice at Helena.
Each image carried a date and short description.
Unable to maintain household responsibilities.
Emotionally dysregulated.
Fails assigned task.
Unsafe exhaustion while holding infant.
Damiano stared at the photographs.
The evidence appeared to show a woman falling apart.
What it did not show was who had been preventing her from sleeping.
Who had dismissed the nurse.
Who had forced work on her.
Who had blocked the gate.
Who had taken her phone.
Marina had been pushed toward collapse.
Then photographed while collapsing.
Caroline looked at Damiano.
“This is deliberate documentation.”
“For what?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Damiano looked again at the planned nursery.

Helena had not merely expected Marina to become too sick to care for Nico.
She had already prepared the place where she intended the baby to go when it happened.
