Chapter 15 - The joint account

Vanessa and I had a joint household account containing about $74,000.
Mortgage and large expenses came from another account.
This one covered travel, renovations, furniture, taxes, and household costs.
The week after the incident, I moved $52,000 into an account in my name alone.
I told myself:
Protect Noah.
Prevent Vanessa from taking money for lawyers.
Rebecca found out.
“What did you do?”
“Transferred funds.”
“From joint title?”
“Yes.”
“Back.”
“She could drain it.”
“So can you, apparently.”
I hated that.
“Half is mine.”
“Then the legal system can determine division. You do not get to pre-divide marital assets because you are furious.”
I moved $52,000 into attorney escrow pending agreement.
Vanessa’s lawyer received notice.
Later, temporary financial orders allocated household expenses fairly.
My transfer did not become a separate lawsuit because I corrected quickly.
Still.
Second mistake.
Different from evidence access.
Same impulse.
When frightened, seize control.
Money.
Information.
Systems.

My father had been the same way.
I did not want to become him simply because my reasons were more sympathetic.
