Chapter 22 - Julia tells me the part I hated

Julia and I rebuilt slowly.
One afternoon she said:
“You know Mara was angry with you too.”
“What?”
“Before she died.”
“For what?”
“She thought you let work become an excuse.”
I became defensive instantly.
“I was paying for everything.”
Julia stared.
“That sentence.”
“What?”
“That’s the sentence.”
I shut up.
Mara’s audio message contained something I had ignored because Vanessa’s conduct was louder.
Near the end she said:
“Ryan, I know you think providing is how you protect us. Sometimes I need you to know what’s happening inside the house instead.”
I had heard it.
Then emotionally filed it under dead-wife wisdom.
Julia forced it back into the present.
“You were working sixty hours.”
“I reduced travel.”
“After her second chemo.”
“I had partners relying on me.”
“I know.”
She was not accusing me of causing cancer.
Or abuse.
She was describing structure.
I asked:
“Do you think Mara blamed me for Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“She wanted you to notice more.”
That hurt.
I had always thought of myself as an attentive father.
I was, in many ways.
Bedtime.
Doctor visits.
School events.
But I trusted systems once I delegated them.
Mara handles household.
Then Vanessa.
If nobody called, I assumed okay.
After the cage, I almost corrected too far.
Cameras.
Check-ins.
Random calls.
Noah started asking:
“Why you always checking?”
His therapist warned me:
“Do not make him responsible for proving he is safe every hour.”
There.
Another extreme.
I learned to ask without surveilling.
May you like
Harder.
Healthier.
