Chapter 26 - Mara’s last file

Three years after the USB appeared, I listened again to Mara’s full message.
Not because of Vanessa.
Because I had finally stopped hearing it only as evidence.
The last two minutes were about me.
“Ryan, if this turns into nothing, please do not become unbearable about it.”
I laughed.
Typical Mara.
Then:
“If it turns into something, remember that being furious is not the same as being useful.”
Of course she had left me homework.
“I know you. You’ll want to fix every year in one night.”
She was talking about finances and Vanessa then.
It applied to Noah later.
“You can’t.”
Then:
“Take care of Noah. Take care of yourself. And stop treating every person who disappoints you like they have become only the worst thing they did.”
I paused.
That was harder.
Vanessa had committed a serious crime against my son.
She had also spent nights beside Mara during chemotherapy.
Brought Noah to the hospital.
Helped me survive grief.
Then manipulated that trust.
People want those histories to cancel each other.
They do not.
Good acts did not excuse the cage.
The cage did not retroactively mean every earlier kindness was fake.
That complexity did not restore marriage.
It restored accuracy.
Mara continued:
“And if you’re listening because I died, I’m really sorry.”
My throat closed.
“You’re going to be terrible at doing both our jobs.”
I laughed through tears.
“Ask for help.”
Then:
“Kiss Noah.”
Silence.
And:
“Replace the faucet.”
The recording ended.
I sat in the kitchen.
The faucet no longer leaked.
The house was quiet.
May you like
Noah, now eight, was upstairs complaining through his video game headset.
Life.
