Chapter 21 - Noah and Otis

For the first six months, Noah would not let Otis leave his bed.

He carried the bear to breakfast.

To therapy.

To Julia’s house.

Once to preschool until the teacher gently explained:

“Otis can wait in your backpack.”

Noah screamed.

We compromised.

Bear in cubby.

At home, I repaired the seam.

Not myself.

I almost did.

Then realized I was terrible with needles.

Julia sewed it.

No hidden USB.

Just stuffing.

Before closing the seam, Noah asked:

“Where memory thing?”

“The USB?”

“Yes.”

“Police had it. Now lawyers have copies of the files.”

“Put back.”

I understood.

For him, the object belonged to Mom.

Not court.

But the original drive had become evidentiary property for a time, then was eventually returned.

I asked his therapist.

She said:

“Do not put adult evidence back into the child’s comfort object.”

Right.

I copied Mara’s family photographs and bedtime recordings to secure storage.

Then bought a tiny audio player containing only Mara’s voice messages and stories.

No financial files.

No accusations.

No legal evidence.

It went into a zippered pouch in Otis.

Playback only.

No secret burden.

Noah pressed the button.

Mara’s voice:

“Goodnight, my favorite tiny tornado.”

He smiled.

Then cried.

Then slept.

The teddy returned to being a teddy.

Mostly.
