Chapter 8 - Mara’s voice

The forensic analyst authenticated several files as originating from Mara’s laptop.

Device identifiers matched her old MacBook.

Created dates matched its backup history.

The folder:

RYAN - READ THIS

contained a nine-minute audio recording.

Mara’s voice.

The first time I heard it, I had to stop after twenty seconds.

“Ryan, if you’re listening to this, I either finally got brave enough to show you everything or something happened before I could.”

I left the room.

Rebecca followed.

“Do you want to stop?”

“No.”

I washed my face.

Returned.

Started again.

Mara sounded tired.

Not delirious.

Not dramatic.

“Most of this may turn out to have stupid explanations. I hope it does.”

Then:

“I think Vanessa used the household care card for expenses that were not ours, and I think she has been lying to me about reimbursements.”

She listed examples.

Designer shoes.

Hotel stay.

Electronics.

Restaurant charges.

Some later reimbursed.

Some coded in a spreadsheet as:

medical errands

or

household supplies.

“Total I can’t explain is somewhere around nineteen or twenty thousand after repayments.”

Grounded.

Then the part that hurt more.

“I also don’t like how she talks to Noah when she thinks nobody is listening.”

My hands clenched.

Mara continued:

“Twice I heard her call him manipulative when he was crying. Once I found him in the laundry room with the door closed because Vanessa said he needed to calm down.”

Laundry room.

Not locked, Mara said.

Maybe ten minutes.

She confronted Vanessa.

Vanessa apologized.

Promised not to do it again.

Mara did not fire her immediately.

Why?

“I need help and I hate that this is true.”

There.

Dependency.

Then:

“I haven’t told you because you’re already running between work, my appointments, and Noah, and I keep thinking I can verify it myself.”

I covered my face.

Mara had protected me from information.

Same family disease in a different form.

She continued:

“I know that’s wrong.”

Then:

“I made this backup because files disappeared from the shared household folder twice. I don’t know if Vanessa deleted them or if I’m losing my mind.”

Pain.

“I put the drive in Otis because nobody touches that bear except me and Noah.”

There.

No magical clue.

A tired woman creating an offline backup.

Then:

“If I’m wrong, apologize to Vanessa for me.”

And:

“If I’m right, don’t turn this into one of your crusades. Find out what happened.”

Mara knew me.

Even dying, apparently.

The recording ended:

“Kiss Noah for me. And please replace the kitchen faucet. It still leaks.”

I laughed and cried at the same time.

May you like

The faucet had been replaced fourteen months after she died.

I had forgotten she ever asked.
