Chapter 11

Ryan’s apology took longer.
Five months.
Emily was close to delivery.
She agreed to meet him in my garden.
Not alone.
I stayed far enough away that they could speak privately, close enough that she knew I was there.
Her choice.
Ryan looked thinner.
No dramatic transformation.
Good.
He began badly.
“I’m sorry for everything.”
Emily stopped him.
“Name it.”
I almost smiled.
She had learned from Linda’s second apology.
Ryan tried again.
“I grabbed you when you tried to leave arguments.”
Emily waited.
“I pushed you.”
More.
“I blamed you for bruises I caused.”
More.
“I let my mother make you doubt whether leaving was reasonable.”
More.
“And when you became pregnant, I acted like my fear gave me the right to control where you went.”
There.
No stress.
No status.
No fatherhood excuse.
Behavior.
Emily asked:
“Why should I believe you’re different?”
Ryan looked at the ground.
“You shouldn’t yet.”
Best answer available.
Then:
“I’m trying to become someone whose change doesn’t depend on you coming back.”
That mattered.
Emily cried quietly.
Not romance.
Grief.
The man she married had finally said the sentence she needed after she no longer needed him to say it.
Timing is cruel.
She told him:
“I’m not coming back.”
Ryan nodded.
No argument.
Then:
“I know.”

That meeting ended without touch.
Correct.
