Chapter 12

My granddaughter was born six weeks later.

Grace.

Emily chose the name.

Not after family.

Not legacy.

She liked it.

Good enough.

I waited outside until Emily asked me in.

I had learned.

She looked exhausted.

Happy.

Terrified.

Normal.

Grace slept on her chest.

I stared too long.

Emily smiled.

“You can hold her.”

Permission.

I did.

Tiny.

Warm.

Nothing like holding power.

Everything like holding responsibility.

Ryan was not there.

Emily did not want him at the birth.

He respected that.

He saw Grace three days later in a controlled visit.

No Linda.

Just him, Emily, and a nurse nearby.

I did not attend.

Again.

Not my relationship.

Afterward Emily told me he cried.

Held Grace.

Returned her when asked.

Left.

No reconciliation.

No cruelty.

Just fatherhood beginning under different conditions than anyone imagined.

Linda met Grace two months later.

Emily made the rules.

Short visit.

No photographs unless asked.

No commentary about whose side of the family she resembled.

Linda obeyed.

Mostly.

She said Grace had Ryan’s nose.

Emily looked at her.

Linda corrected:

“Grace has Grace’s nose.”

May you like

Awkward.

Good effort.
