Chapter 17

Seven years after the baby shower, Grace was seven.

Emily was thirty-two.

I was older than I enjoyed admitting.

We gathered for a summer dinner at my house.

Not a celebration.

Just family.

Ryan came to pick Grace up afterward.

Linda brought pie.

Emily wore no shawl.

No reason.

At dinner, Grace asked why there was a photograph of her mother pregnant on the hallway table.

One from before the shower.

Emily looked at it.

Then at me.

“That was when I was waiting for Grandpa.”

Grace frowned.

“Why?”

Emily thought.

“Because I needed help.”

“Did Grandpa know?”

“No.”

Grace looked at me accusingly.

I deserved that.

“How come?”

I answered myself.

“Because your mom was scared that if she told me, I would make everything bigger instead of helping her choose what she wanted.”

Grace considered.

Then:

“Did you?”

“Eventually I listened.”

Emily smiled.

“That’s accurate.”

Ryan stood near the doorway.

He heard.

So did Linda.

Nobody corrected history to make themselves comfortable.

That was new.

Grace ran outside for her shoes.

Emily lingered beside me.

“You know what I remember most?”

“The bruises?”

“No.”

“The moment I said take me home.”

I waited.

“You didn’t ask whether I was sure.”

That mattered more than I knew then.

She had spent months being told she was emotional.

Confused.

Pregnant.

Overreacting.

The first thing I gave her was not a solution.

It was belief.

Across the driveway, Grace shouted for Ryan.

He answered.

Linda carried leftovers to her car.

Emily kissed my cheek.

Ordinary movement.

No perfect family.

No erased harm.

No romantic reunion required to prove growth.

I looked at my daughter’s bare arms as she walked toward her own car.

Not because the bruises were gone.

Because she was going home.

Her home.

May you like

By choice.

And this time, nobody reached out to stop her.
